On June 6th and 7th, the eighth graders went to the Holocaust Memorial Center. We asked a couple eighth graders some questions about the Holocaust to see what they learned. Maya Zylman learned that prisoners had to put the dead bodies in an incinerator and that a lot of people died in the box cars. She also knew that people said that the prisoners were skin and bones, but when she saw the photos of the prisoners, she was shocked at how little body mass and nutrition they had. Leora Kaye added that she learned about new people who helped keep prisoners alive and some survivors she didn’t already know about.

Back at school, every eighth grader made a butterfly in honor or memory of a victim of the Holocaust. These are beautiful tributes to their struggles.

This was an important trip because not a lot of kids knew the details of this horrible time. It’s vital information to learn so that we can learn about past events and keep them from happening again. While this was a difficult trip, eighth graders knew that they gained a lot from this experience.
