High school is scary. I’m not going to sugar coat this at all and say that it’s a “walk in the park.” High school are the two words, as an eighth grader, that shake me to my core. Okay, not really but it still kind of freaks me out thinking about it and it’s definitely pretty nerve wracking for eighth graders to think about. As newspaper feature writers, we thought what better way to send off the eighth graders than an article dedicated to how they feel about high school. You already heard what I had to say, and now you can hear from a few others.

When we talked to Jessie Lucas, she seemed to be relatively nervous but also excited. She said, “High school makes me scared because it makes me nervous that people are going to tower over me.” Jessie, I’m right there with you.

Talking to Dominic Mathis-Nelson and Ryan Weingarden was quite different though. They were definitely more excited about all of the new opportunities that we will have as high schoolers, versus being concerned about the nerves and what could go wrong when experiencing life as a freshman. Dominic said “The one thing I’m super excited about is meeting new people and making new friends.” Ryan was equally enthusiastic saying, “I’m kind of excited and happy. I feel like I’ll be more independent and have more opportunities in high school.”

Lastly we talked to Baylee Chittenden, who definitely seemed the most relaxed about the transition. Baylee noted that she felt prepared by saying, “My teachers this year have been able to be a big help and give me the knowledge I need to be successful.” While Baylee seemed to be slightly nervous for the new people and environment, she mostly seemed like she was ready for the change and was ready for some alternative scenery.

So there. We’ve told you about how the eighth grade class is feeling about high school, and now all you can do is give them the best farewell you can because underneath all of that excitement, I promise, we’re all a bit nervous.
