Imagine walking into your first job to teach a bunch of middle schoolers in the middle of May. This is exactly what happened to Warner’s new math teacher, Ms. Olkowski. I interviewed Ms. Olkowski and asked her some questions about this experience.

  • What made you want to become a teacher?

“I always thought that kids were hilarious, and I wanted to work with them. Also, I wanted to impact them in some way. I really enjoy seeing those light bulb moments.”

  • How did it feel to come into a first time job in May?

“It was tricky. My class had gone through two teachers previously, and they didn’t know me, so it was hard to establish my classroom the way I wanted it. It still is tough, but it is getting better.”

  • How are the kids and teachers reacting to you?

“The kids are starting to warm up to me. I just have to stay consistent with my teaching style. The staff is very friendly and supportive.”

  • What has been the most fun part of this job?

“Getting to know each of the students’ personalities.”

  • Can you list three adjectives that describe your teaching style.

“1) Energetic – if you’re not excited about what you are teaching, how should you expect your students to be? 2) Hands on – it’s important to be involved with my students. 3) Encouraging – I always want to be there for my students.

  • What is one fun fact that nobody knows about you?
  • “I bathed elephants in Thailand.”

    • What was your favorite subject growing up? What was your least favorite?

“My favorite subject growing up was math, and my least favorite subject was English.”

    • Finally, what advice would you give to a first year teacher coming into a classroom after the school year has started?

“Establish your expectations right off the bat, and don’t let them get away with anything.”
