“The feeling of the water rushing against my skin is indescribable. I can’t quite explain it.”  Greta Gidley is a 14 year old eighth grader, and if you’ve ever talked to her, you probably know that she loves to swim. At the age of three, Greta started swimming at her local swim club, Kendallwood. That is where she felt most at home.

Greta’s biggest challenges are balancing swimming with school and homework and also finding time to spend with friends. Her main support system is her friends from swimming; she says that without them, she wouldn’t be the person she is today.  Together, they travel to meets every weekend. These can last from all day Friday to Sunday. They also spend a ton of time together at practice. Having this common bond makes for a supportive group of kids.

Today, Greta competes at national swim meets with many high school students. At only 13 years old, this is an amazing accomplishment.  At Greta’s first national meet, she swam the 200 freestyle. She placed 58th in the entire nation with a time of 1:54.14. She also swam the 100 freestyle and placed 70th with a time of 52.88. At this age, these are amazing times, and at her future high school, North Farmington, she has already broken the 100 freestyle record of 53.30 seconds.

Greta aspires to go to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and swim in college at either the University of Michigan or University of Arizona. Greta’s piece of advice to anyone who is trying to achieve a goal: “It doesn’t matter who’s in first place; just follow your dream.”
